Mrs. Mary G. Phillips
December 6, 1934 - January 1, 2025
Mary G. Phillips, 90, of Millville, NJ, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday January 1, 2025. Mary was born in Deepstep, Georgia in 1934 to Reuben W. Giles and Gertrude Anderson Giles, she was predeceased by an older sister Bessie Whitesides of Georgia. She graduated from Asbury College, where she not only got her degree in teaching education but met her future husband. In 1955 she married the love of her life (Clyde A. Phillips) and moved to New Jersey where she began her career teaching elementary and middle school, though she found her stride on her beloved path of teaching science. First teaching 7th grade at Port Norris Elementary School then moving to teaching 6th grade at Olivet Elementary School in Pittsgrove Twp, then finishing her teaching career at Pittsgrove Twp Middle School. Beyond the act of teaching, she enjoyed presiding over spelling bee competitions and science fairs and always took great pride in seeing her students excel in and out of the classroom. Her free summers were delightfully filled with gardening and family camping trips. After retirement she channeled her energies into United Methodist Women (now United Women in Faith) missions. She spearheaded a campaign to provide school supplies and uniforms for children in Haiti. She also volunteered her time at Trinity United Methodist Church (Millville) as a cook preparing and serving meals during monthly luncheon and annual dinners. She is survived by her husband of 69 years Clyde A. Phillips, her daughters Joy D. Municchi, Suzanne D. Phillips, granddaughter Elizabeth R. Phillips, and adopted daughter Cora L Lammar, and a many additional grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
